These elegant lacquer plates with intricate flower patterns were made in the early 1900’s utilizing the “chinkin (gold inlay)” technique, which involves engraving designs and pictures using a chisel or a blade, then sticking or rubbing in gold powder and gold foil to add color on the lacquerware. In contrast to the “lacquering” of maki-e, chinkin is a “carving” technique, so every carving is a true challenge. Once the cutting begins there is no room for error. When you carefully observe the design, you will feel the bottomless depth of profundity and the true sense of perfection and attention to detail put into these pieces of artwork.
