Tray
Bon tray
This is a stamp tray used for carefully presenting money envelopes, crafted by Tamashima Miki, a Maki-e artist of the Taisho Era, based on the sketch of a bell cricket by Issei Domoto. The bell cricket holds high status in Japan. Buddhists in the Kegonji Temple in Kyoto raise thousands of bell crickets in bamboo cages so they can meditate on the beautiful ringing sound they make through their wings. Due to the rarity of bell crickets, they are also a symbol of true love and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities in Japanese literature.

Lacquer plate - bird
Developed a thousand years ago during the Heian period, maki-e is an exemplary lacquerware technique that involves using gold and silver dust with layers of varnish to produce an image. The intricate design is created with Japan’s national bird, the pheasant, as its motif. Every detail is lovingly drawn by artisans with a true sense for perfection.
Plate
carved lacquer plate - flower
These elegant lacquer plate with intricate flower patterns were made utilizing the “Chinkin(Gold Inlay)” technique, which involves engraving designs and pictures using a chisel or a blade, then sticking or rubbing in gold powder and gold foil to add color on the lacquerware. In contrast to the “lacquering” of maki-e, chinkin is a “carving” technique, so every carving is a true challenge. Once the cutting begins there is no room for error. When you carefully observe the design, you will feel the bottomless depth of profundity and the true sense of perfection and attention to detail put into these pieces of artwork.
