Unrakugama Pottery

Kiyomizu ware is one of the most renowned pottery traditions in Japan. It has a history of 400 years, since the days when the culture of the tea ceremony flourished.

Unrakugama is at the forefront of the Kiyomizu ware tradition for the last 130 years. The current head of the store, the third generation master Unraku Saito, is one of the few craftsmen in the industry who is officially recognized by the Japanese government for his artistry.

Saito Sensei is currently 93 years old but is still active as ever. As the only living member of the six young craftsmen who started a new movement in Kiyomizu ware, he has only taken two days off work in the last 30 years. "I don't have any hobbies. I only get enjoyment out of Kiyomizu ware," he says.

With many visitors in his shop, he is busy during the day showcasing his craftsmanship. "I start my uninterrupted work time at 10pm and go all the way to 2am. I like those hours because I can concentrate on what I truly love and explore the infinite possibilities of Kiyomizu ware."
