The ocean wave pattern on this beautifully crafted fan symbolizes the bounty of the vast ocean, along with wishes for a peaceful and tranquil life. The design is known as "seigaiha," which literally translates to "blue sea and waves." It consists of circles superimposed on one another so only the top portion of each "wave" is visible.
The design has been in use in Japan since the 6th century and was used to depict the oceans and seas on maps.
The fan, known as "cha sensu," is placed in front of your knees during tea ceremonies when you greet others. The product comes with a stand for the cha sensu so it can be used as an interior decoration as well.
